Ingredients
The key to this dish lies in selecting the right ingredients. I always reach for the freshest sausage I can find—preferably from a local butcher or a trusted brand—to ensure that spicy flavor really stands out. For the feta, I like to use a high-quality, crumbly variety because it melts just enough without losing its character. The honey should be raw or pure for that natural floral sweetness that ties everything together beautifully.
- 1 pound spicy Italian sausage, casing removed
- 1 pre-made pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup thinly sliced red onion
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon honey (preferably raw or wildflower)
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)
- Fresh basil or oregano for garnish
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Substitution tip: If you prefer milder sausage, use sweet Italian sausage and add extra red pepper flakes to adjust heat. Goat cheese can be swapped for feta for a creamier twist.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat as well—this helps achieve a crispy crust.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and crumble the spicy sausage into the pan. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 7-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat and set aside.
- Roll out your pizza dough on a floured surface to your preferred thickness, then transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet or preheated pizza stone.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Distribute the cooked sausage evenly over the cheese, followed by the crumbled feta and sliced red onion.
- Season lightly with salt and black pepper. If you like extra heat, sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes on top.
- Bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and immediately drizzle honey over the hot pizza. Garnish with fresh basil or oregano leaves before slicing and serving.
One of my favorite moments is that first drizzle of honey—it adds a subtle sweetness that perfectly cuts through the spice and saltiness.
